First 5K Run! Color Me Rad

This morning Eric and I and his siblings/inlaws ran in the Color Me Rad 5K!

It was a great time. We got there an hour after our wave started because traffic was bad, but it didn't really matter when you ran. Nobody checked or anything!

I can't wait for next year!

Fleece DIaper Cover

This is a quick and easy project! I have now made Tallet 8 of these covers, 4 of each Medium and Large. They are fleece diaper covers for my fitted diapers for nighttime. They are super breathable but still water resistant.

I also have some available in my etsy shop!

8 Months!

Well I am officially a terrible blogger! Being a busy mom will do that to you! Most of my freetime (AKA naptime) is spend doing chores, cooking and sewing diapers!

Our boy is now 8 months old. We have been talking regularly about how "grown up" he seems now. Baby doesn't seem like the right word to describe him anymore, he is a little boy!

He started crawling a few weeks ago! And by crawling I mean doing the worm, but he gets where he needs to go. He is *almost* able to crawl on all fours. Regardless of crawl method, he gets around. He now leaves the fun and safety of his playmat to come join me in the kitchen, play with the dog bowls and eat morsels of food he scavenges. I try to keep my floors a lot cleaner now!

He is also starting to mimic us with sounds. So far no words, but he enjoys when we emit the same yell he does.

We took him camping a few weekends ago, and he loves it! He really seems to love being outside a lot!

6 Months!

This post is slightly late, but we have been busy!

Time really does fly when you have kids. It is hard to believe that in 4 months I am scheduled to go back to work. I am trying to figure out some options now so I don't have to go back full time. I would love to stay home with Tallet.

Tallet is growing in leaps in bounds. He is into 6-9 and 6-12 month clothes, most of which JUST fit. I am sure he will be in the next size in a month or two.

He is eating solid foods 3 times a day and loves it. We try something new every 3 days, and he doesn't always love it at first. I am making my own baby food. I am trying to do some baby led weaning but  he doesn't get enough food that way and at this point he is used to getting a certain amount of solids, he cries in hunger if he doesn't get it.

I am also back to breastfeeding. The 2 week break combined with a routine of apple cider vinegar, olive oil and baking soda worked to get rid of thrush was the only thing that worked. I literally tried every single other option other than gentian violet. I am so glad the pain is gone, breastfeeding is wonderful now. I am SO SO SO glad I stuck out the pain for 5 months instead of giving up. Bottle feeding/ bottle washing was no fun. I pump every night before I go to bed for extra milk for when I need to leave him with someone.

He has moved to his crib for night. This means he is upstairs, which seems really far away. We do have a fantastic monitor that if I hold it up to my ear I can hear him breathing. It isn't one of those $300 monitors that have video and movement sensors (my friends decided that would make me too paranoid so they bought me this one) .

Anyways, his transition went VERY smoothly. We were using the Ferber method up to this point, and it was working ok. But I really didn't want to let him cry it out for 2 hours his first night in the crib so we (I) read the No Cry Sleep Solution and we are combining the methods. We have a bedtime routine : bath, change, eat, book, and then lullaby music/soother/teddy and getting rocked to sleep. If he wakes up after we put him down for night, he has to cry it out. He never cries more than 1 or 2 minutes at a time. The second night he was in his crib we tried picking him up and rocking him back to sleep when he woke up, but every time I would lay him down he would cry again. When I would pick him up, he was asleep before he hit my chest. Then I would lay him down and he would cry. I did this for an hour before I became so frustrated I just left him in his crib and walked away. Within 5 minutes he was alseep and he slept through the rest of the night. My life lesson from this is : the sleep methods you read about in books are great to give you ideas, but they do not work for every baby. My advice is to read as many books as your heart desires and then do what works best for you and your baby.

We are going to slowly phase out the getting rocked to sleep part of it. As long as we are consistent with the bedtime routine, he will learn that it is time to go to sleep for the night. Actually, I have found that he doesn't fall asleep in my arms completely. He kind of writhes around like he is uncomfortable and then once he hits the mattress he is out like a light. So he is kinda phasing out the rocking to sleep thing himself!

Naptime is a little more of a challenge, he doesn't fall asleep as fast as he does for nighttime. But he has improved napwise in the last week, so I am sure it will continue to get better. We have reduced the number of naps from 4 to 3 so I think that helped.

Enough about sleep, Tallet loves to play. He still enjoys getting books read to him, and will often calm right down if he is grumpy when you start to read to him. He can move around in circles on his mat quite well. He can get up on his hands and knees from time to time, so I am sure crawling isn't too far away. He has started to take steps when hold his hands, and will walk all the way across the room. Up until a week ago he showed no interested in that. He also likes to stand up "by himself" against the couch or coffee table or me. My hands are always there to catch him, but I am surprised how much balance he has gained in the last two weeks doing this!

Tallet's baby dedication was yesterday! It was such a special and meaningful time for us. A lot of family came out to support us. It is so important to us that our family and church commit to helping us to foster Tallet's relationship with God. I want nothing more for him than to live a faith filled life! After church we had family and friends over for lunch. It was such a great time, I just wish I had a bigger house to fit more people!

Well, this post has been long enough for one day! I just wasted a whole naptime typing this when I could have been sewing!

Budgeting

One of my best friends, Coralee, doesn't think I post often enough anymore. She figures I do nothing all day, so I should be able to post at least once a day! Hahaha. This is for your, Cor!

Yesterday Cor came over and I helped her make a budget like we do. I have been using a budget for a few years, but just over a year ago we switched to a cash only budget. I had been watching the show Till Debt Do Us Part with Gail Vax Oxlade and that is what she does with all the couples on that show.

Now I no money guru. In fact, historically I am terrible with money. I have gotten myself into a lot of trouble with money. Trouble I am STILL paying for today. But this method has really helped me to learn how to handle money. We are now well on our way out of debt, and even have some money in savings. All the bills get paid on time and there is no more scrounging around at the end of the month when the loans come out! In fact, in less than a year the only personal debt we will have is a mortgage (unless we decide to get another vehicle, of course). This is what we do:

I used Excel to make a spreadsheet with two categories: Fixed and Variable.

The fixed expenses are things like mortgage, loans, hydro, telephone, cell phone, tv, car insurance, life insurance, house insurance. I pay all these things online at the beginning of the month, or they come out  automatically, and hydro I write a check out.

Variables are things like food, gas, clothes, gifts, pets, entertainment, miscellaneous, personal money and tithe. I take out cash for all these categories at the beginning of the month and put them into bags. You can use jars if you want. And then that is all the money we have for those things for the entire month. It works for us to take out all the money at once because Eric's only gets paid once a month. But for some people they take it out once a week, or twice a month. Depending on how they get paid.

I guess technically there is a 3rd and 4th category: Savings and Debt Repayment. I have savings set up online to transfer a set amount on the first of every month to two accounts : Personal Savings and Tallet's Savings. This way I don't have to worry about transferring it every month, it is automatically done for me. We also have a set amount for debt repayment every month, I do that online too.

If we want extra things over and above out budget, we use savings for that. Things like car repairs and large purchases like a breast pump.

Something that is a necessity for a cash budget is to take your debit card (and credit cards if you use them) out of your wallet/purse. This is something I didn't do at first, but then I found myself using my debit card when I ran out of money for certain categories. And then that meant I would have to readjust the budget for the next month to make up for the shortage. I budget down to the last dollar, so there is not room in the budget to do that. Just take the cards out of your wallet so there is no temptation to do that. Freeze your cards if you need to. That way if you need to use them for something, you have a while to think about it before you do. We use the debit card strictly for accessing the savings for the extra things.

I do feel stupid when I go to the store and take money of of a baggie to pay. And I am pretty bad at spending most of the food and miscellaneous money at the beginning of the month and then I scrimp the rest of the month. I need to learn to spread it out a bit better.

I highly recommend using this method. I used to budget by using quicken and tracking every purchase on the computer, but I often got backlogged and it was complicated. This method is easy and it works.

Our Farmhouse Table

Our table is finally done! It is exactly what I wanted it to look like, and that doesn't happen to me very often.

Below I posted pictures of the Restoration Hardware table ours was inspired by. It is on sale right now for $2500.

Our table cost under $300, and we still have enough wood, stain and wax to build a coffee table too!

I kind like ours better, too!

My First 5K!

I just signed Eric and I up for this 5K on July 20th! Alyssa and Sean are also doing it with us! It will be so much fun!

I went for a 5K run today and I did it in 45:15! Not too bad! I ran for 10 min and walked for 5, cause I didn't want to overdo it on the first time. It felt SO good to get out for a run. Now I just need to cut that time in half and we are good to go!

What's Been Going On

It has been a while since I wrote a decent update from around here!

Tallet is now 5 months old! He is a happy baby for the most part. He has two teeth, can sit up, sleeps through the night and has started eating solids and LOVES them. So far we have just done rice and oatmeal cereal. I absolutely love being his mommy, and it is getting more and more fun every day! Most of my day is spend around Tallet-centered things. But in my small amount of spare time I have been doing this:

Making diapers. I have made a bunch of testers for people:

I am still waiting on a print fabric order from the US so I can make a bunch more for Tallet! I really enjoy making diapers!

I have started taking another photography course at PrairieView Photography! It is awesome and I am learning SO much more about photography! The driving to the city isn't great, but it isn't forever.

We are working on the table again. The table top is stained and ready to be waxed. The base needs to be assembled, prepped, stained and waxed. I am hoping to get it done this week! I cannot wait to see the finished product sitting in my kitchen!

I have been doing a few Steeped Tea parties here and there, and it is a lot of fun! I am hoping to do it more seriously in the fall when I am done mat leave.

I am enjoying Weight Watchers, and it seems to be working! I am really itching to start running again. I went out for a run a few days ago, on a day I thought was warm, turns out that the wind was bitterly cold. I had Tallet with me so I turned around pretty quick. I have kind of fallen off the workout wagon while I was pumping, so I am hoping to get back on ASAP!

I pumped for almost two weeks, but now I am back to breastfeeding. We were at a hockey tournament in Gimli for weekend, and we stayed at the hotel, so it was nice not to have to worry about bottles and pumping. It was pain-free for the first little but, but it is starting to hurt again. I am trying a baking soda/olive oil routine hoping that will work.

A few weeks ago I was presented with an exciting business opportunity! In the coming weeks and months we will have talks and try to figure out if it is something that would be worth the time and if I can get a business loan. I would absolutely love to work at home! I cannot say much about it now, but if and when I can, I can't wait to share!

I think that is most of what has been going on around these parts!

He's Sitting!

Tallet is growing in leaps and bounds! He has been able to sit upright for a few seconds at a time for a little while, but today when I tried he could hold him self up for MINUTES at a time! And he was reaching and playing with toys all without toppling over!

He is also sprouting a tooth! It poked through the gums on Saturday! So many changes so fast!

A Big Purchase & A Big Decision

I bought this today.

The pain was not going away. The only medication that helped a bit was diflucan, and my doctor refused to give me anymore. After 4.5 months of dreading feeding my baby, I couldn't do it anymore.

I feel a lot of guilt about this. I feel like a huge failure. This was a very hard decision for me, and it will take a few days for me to see if I am happy with it or not. Full time pumping will be a lot of work, so now I have added more work to my plate. Now I have to wash bottles, etc. I am definitely not excited about that.

I am going to exclusively pump for a week or two, and then maybe try again to feed him once I have had a chance to heal.

My Newest Diaper!

I have waited for a while to get all my materials to  make diapers, and I finally got some of them! This is my first diaper with them, and a new pattern. I am in love! The wicking jersey inner is incredible and I love the color combo!

Tallet has worn it once and it worked perfect!

I am currently in the tester phase, if you are interested in testing a diaper contact me for details!
I am hoping to be able to make a diaper that is the favorite one in the stash!

Chill

Today I did my second weigh in with weight watchers. I lost another 1.5 lbs, and the first emotion I feel is disappointment. I feel like that is not enough, I should have done better, I should have lost more. But I have to remind myself that if the scale is going down, that is a good thing. And I am not going to loose 40 pounds in a month.

This is my background pic right now....

Helps to remind me that this isn't going to happen overnight!

Weight Watchers

So I joined Weight Watchers. A few of you suggested it. I had tried it last year and I really liked it, but then I got pregnant with Tallet and was not supposed to be on it. They actually offered to give my money back when I emailed them about what to do! That is another reason I wanted to join again.

I joined for 6 months. I am going to try it for that period of time, and if it doesn't work for me than I will never do it again. But I just had to try.

I am loving it so far. I love the points plus system, it is easy to keep track of what you eat and your activity. I love that I can eat what I want, Weight Watchers teaches you portion control. Sure have a whole chocolate bar. But it is going to use up enough points as a healthy meal would, so which one would you choose? I have already found I am not snacking on things I normally would because I don't want to  use up my points.

I have an app on my ipod that is SO handy for tracking points. And it has a points plus calculator, all you need is the fat, carbs, fiber and protien of a food to calculate it.

My weigh in day is Sundays, so this Sunday was 3 days into it. I had already lost 2 lbs! I stepped on the scale 3 times to make sure it was right, cause I didn't believe it. I get a ridiculous amount of points in a day because I am breastfeeding, so I was pretty skeptical that I could loose weight on that amount of points, but I did! I am trying my BEST not to step on the scale again till next Sunday, but it is hard.

I am kinda interested in starting up a Weight Watchers meeting group in Riverton. There has never been one and I think a bunch of people would be interested. But I think that will wait for a while to see if this system actually works.

I am also half finished the 30 day shred. Today is day 17. It is pretty rare for me to get this far into a workout series without giving up, and that gives me a lot of confidence actually. I don't like using the word proud a whole lot, but for lack of a better word I am proud of myself for sticking to it and not missing a day yet!

This HAS to be the time I succeed. I can not and will not fail this time. I have been failing at this game for 10 years and this time I will win. I have to win. I love winning.

Simply In Season - A Cookbook Challenge

The other day I watched the movie Julie & Julia and I was inspired to cook through an entire cookbook. I wasn't quite ready to search for bizzare ingredients to do the Julia Child cookbook, so some people suggested Simply In Season. It is actually a MCC cookbook, and you cook and bake with veggies and fruits that are in season. This means they taste better and they are more affordable.

This is my second week and we are enjoying it a lot. Most of the recipes have been good. I have enjoyed trying new things.

At the beginning of the week I make a menu, shop for all the ingredients. This has made making suppers WAY easier and more fun. I was going to list all the things we have tried, but I meant to make this post a week ago and now it is too many recipes to name off hand. I will try to post more about it everyday.

Today I made Sweet Potato soup which was VERY good. Suprising for me because I can only handle so much sweet potato at a time. I also made the Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls which were ok, and Secret Chocolate Cake. The 'secret" is that these is beets in it, which isn't all that secret to my taste buds. I am not too crazy about it, it tastes too earthy for me!

Many Faces of Tallet Reid

Tallet is sure going to have to get used to having a camera in his face, because I love taking pictures of him! I love his many faces, he's got such personality. These adorable pictures also help me to forget the fact that it just took us an hour to get him down for a nap.

30 Day Shred

Today I finished Level 1 of Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. I did it Mon-Friday for two weeks. It has worked out quite well for me to do it in the morning while Tallet naps, but a few times I had to do it in the afternoon or evening. I really want to make working out a habit, and so far so good. After I finish this program I hope to do the 90 day Turbo Fire program!

Desperate For Change

I need to change. I have been trying to loose weight since I was 16. Yet here I am almost back to my heaviest weight.

I am tired of feeling depressed.

I am tired of having a low self image.

I am tired of my clothes not fitting properly.

I have tried SO many different things and nothing has been long lasting. Some things have worked, but nothing lasted.

I KNOW how to loose weight. I know it takes healthy eating and exercise. My problem is making it a permanent habit.

I always get off track. I always get stressed and stuff my face. I always find some excuse to fail.

No more failing.

No more excuses.

I NEED to do this.

My goal is to be at my ideal weight by October 20th 2013. I want to be fit. I want to be healthy.  I want to feel good about myself. I want to be healthy enough to get rid of all symptoms of PCOS so I can get pregnant naturally.

To motivate myself I have decided to set aside a certain amount of money to spend on a new wardrobe once I meet my goal. For extra motivation, Eric will get than money to spend on whatever he wants if I don't reach that goal. He has already promised me that he wouldn't try to sabotage me. Even the thought of him spending that money if I fail makes me kinda angry.

The sad part is that I don't know if this will be enough to keep me going. I hope it is. I don't know what else I can do to stay motivated.

Any ideas?
