In the fun of dreaming and planning for our house, somehow I thought of the idea to have wooden countertops. I would really like the look of them, and I would like to stain them the same colour of the table I will build. I am still trying to research it to see what is safe stain wise and what type of wood I should use. We don't care it if gets beat up and burned. In fact we kinda like that. We want it to look rustic and well worn. We actually want to use it as a cutting board too. Eric wants to be able to stick knives in it instead of using a knife block.
If you know of anyone who has done their own wood countertops please let me know. I think I would like to ask them some questions!

I think they are usually oiled with a food grade oil rather than stained. I could be wrong. I know Ikea has sold them in the past, maybe they still do? There could be info on their website.
All the reading I have done talked about treating them with mineral oil every few weeks. But I am wondering if it would be safe to stain them the colour I want first.
